Day 1
The Dragons Welcome: First light in Bhutan
Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly Like Bhutan Travels representative, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We'll then hop into our comfortable vehicle and enjoy the beautiful Paro valley, kicking off your amazing adventure.
- After lunch, our scene shifts. We take a quiet walk to the 17th century Rinpung Dzong, its murals whispering stories of Milarepa. A peaceful end to a beautiful day, with our hearts already dreaming of tomorrow's Tiger's Nest.
Day 2
The Majestic Tiger's Nest - A Pilgrimage to Taktsang
Prepare for an unforgettable day as we embark on a 5–6-hours hike to Bhutan's crown jewel, the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Lhakhang). This iconic site, perched dramatically 600 meters above Paro Valley, is one of the kingdom's most sacred.
Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche's arrival atop a tigress, meditating in a cave that has since become a revered pilgrimage destination. Experience the spiritual aura of this breathtaking monastery, clinging impossibly to the cliffside.
- After your descent, relax and rejuvenate with a traditional hot stone bath, easing any lingering fatigue.
- In the evening, immerse yourself in the local culture by exploring Paro town and its vibrant market.
Day 3
Bhutan’s Bird’s Eye View: West-East aerial passage
Prepare for a breathtaking leap into Bhutan's enchanting east! Our journey begins with a swift, scenic flight from Paro International to Yonphula (2573 mts), Tashigang – a mere 30 minutes that will transport you to a world of hidden wonders. Upon arrival, a warm welcome from our local guide will usher you into the heart of your eastern adventure. From Yonphula Airport, we'll descend into the vibrant district of Trashigang (1900 mts).
- Along the way, we'll explore the dynamic university town of Kanglung, home to the esteemed Sherubtse College.
- Time permitting, we'll immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the sacred Zangtokpelri Monastery.
- Our route will also take us through the historic village of Khaling, a silent witness to past battles. Here, at the National Handloom Centre, you'll witness the intricate artistry of Bhutanese weaving and the vibrant traditions of vegetable dyeing.
Day 4
Sacred Valleys & Winding Roads: Tashigang to Tashiyangtse
After a hearty breakfast, we journey deeper into Bhutan's east, towards the captivating Tashiyangtse (1800 mts).
- Our scenic two-hour drive will first lead us to the mystical Gomphu Kora temple, where the very stones bear the imprints of the legendary Guru Padmasambhava. With luck, the clear mountain air will unveil panoramic views of the Himalayas.
- Upon reaching Tashiyangtse, the historic Tashiyangtse Dzong, a testament to Pema Lingpa's vision, stands proudly, housing a vibrant monastic community.
- We'll then explore the architectural marvel of Chorten Kora, a Nepali-inspired stupa that hosts lively celebrations.
- Our final stop will be the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where traditional arts are not just preserved, but passionately practiced by the next generation.
Day 5
Conquering eastern curves: Tashiyangtse to Mongar
Today, we embark on a scenic drive from Tashiyangtse to Mongar, a four-hour journey that weaves through Bhutan's captivating landscapes and rich history.
- Our first stop is the historically significant Drametse Gompa. A sacred monastery, perched on a 'peak where there is no enemy,' is the birthplace of the mesmerizing Drametse Nga Chham, the drum-infused mask dance now celebrated as a UNESCO intangible heritage. Wander through its chapels, discovering the stories held within its sacred walls.
- Our drive continues to Korila Pass, a breathtaking vantage point at 2450m, where we'll pause for coffee and the opportunity to light butter lamps, a deeply meaningful ritual.
- As we descend into Mongar (1600 m), the imposing Mongar Dzong awaits, a structure that seamlessly blends modern construction with traditional Bhutanese design.
Day 6
Where Every Thread Tells a Story: Mongar's Journey to the Weaver's Realm
Embark on a captivating 2.5-hour journey (74km) into the heart of Bhutan's remote east, as we venture to Lhuntse (1784m), one of the kingdom's most secluded districts. Prepare to be awestruck by the dramatic landscapes: sheer cliffs, deep gorges, and lush forests of pine and conifer, interspersed with the tranquil beauty of remote villages and their vibrant fields. Lhuntse's Kurtoe region, the ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family, beckons.
- We'll visit Takila, home to the colossal Guru Rinpoche statue, where intricately decorated chapels await within their depths.
- Our journey continues to Khoma village, renowned for its exquisite Kishuthara textiles. Here, amidst the gentle slopes and pine forests, you'll witness the artistry of local weavers, whose skill is so esteemed that even the royal family commissions their garments. Experience the authenticity of Khoma's textile cottages and discover the opportunity to acquire these stunning fabrics at a fraction of the capital's prices.
- Finally, we'll return to Autsho for an overnight stay, setting us up for a smoother journey tomorrow.
Day 7
From Lhuntse to the heart of Bhutan, Bumthang
Prepare for an epic journey into the heart of Bhutan, a day-long journey westward through some of the kingdom's most rugged and awe-inspiring terrain. While the drive clocks in at a minimum of seven hours, boredom is simply not an option. This is a road trip of unparalleled scenic journey.
- Our route will unveil the dramatic Namling waterfall, a misty spectacle cascading down a 50-meter cliff at an altitude of 3,000 meters. This section of the East-West National Highway is one of the Bhutan's wild beauty and a contender for one of the world's most thrilling roads.
- We'll then ascend to Thrumshingla Pass, soaring to approximately 3,780 meters, a high-altitude marvel and one of Bhutan's most elevated motorable roads.
- After crossing the Thrumshing-la pass, we'll descend into the enchanting Ura Valley. At 3,100 meters, Ura village, a cluster of 50 traditional houses, remains remarkably untouched by time, offering a captivating glimpse into medieval Bhutan.
Day 8
Bumthang where the legends live
Today, we delve into the spiritual heart of Bhutan, exploring the sacred wonders of Bumthang (2800m). This region, steeped in legend, is the cradle of Bhutanese spirituality, home to tales of Guru Padmasambhava, Pema Linga, and the tertons.
Your guide, our storyteller, will lead us through Bumthang's sacred realms, a journey of discovery by foot or by road:
- Kurjey Lhakhang, a temple complex of immense spiritual importance, named for the body print of Guru Rinpoche.
- We then explore Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, believed to have been built in 659 AD by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet.
- Tamzhing Monastery, born from the vision of Pema Lingpa in 1501, is a repository of extraordinary artistic and cultural treasures. Acknowledging its exceptional significance, the monastery was submitted for UNESCO World Heritage inscription in March 2012 and is presently considered for inclusion on the prestigious list
- Our day concludes with the visit to Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), a serene sanctuary where the legendary Pema Lingpa unearthed Guru Rinpoche's hidden treasures in the 15th century, an ideal place for quiet reflection.
As evening descends, we'll enjoy a leisurely stroll through the heart of Bumthang town.
Day 9
The central to western passage: Bumthang to Gangtey
Embark on a captivating five-hour journey to the breathtaking Gangtey Valley (3000m), a passage through Bhutan's architectural and natural wonders.
- Our route takes us over the Yongtong La Pass (3,425m), leading to the awe-inspiring Trongsa Dzong. Prepare to be mesmerized by this architectural masterpiece, a fortress housing 23 temples.
- A visit to the Taa Dzong, the ‘Tower of Trongsa,’ now a museum dedicated to the Wangchuk dynasty, where centuries of history unfold, marking a poignant moment in Bhutan's centennial celebration of monarchy.
- Along the way, we'll encounter the serene Chendebji Chorten, a pristine white stupa echoing the beauty of Nepal's Swayambhunath.
- We’ll then cross the majestic Pele La Pass (3,420m).
- As we descend into Gangtey, witness the dramatic transformation from pine forests to expansive alpine meadows, the winter sanctuary of the graceful, Black-Necked Cranes.
- As dusk falls, join us at the crane information center to witness these elegant birds and meet the rescued cranes, learning their inspiring stories of resilience and rehabilitation.
Day 10
From Gangtey’s glaciers to Punakha’s rivers
Begin your day with a revitalizing morning walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail (1 hour), a serene passage through fragrant pine forests and whispering bamboo. Listen to the soft calls of the Black-Necked Cranes in winter, their graceful presence a true delight. Breathe in the crisp mountain air and savor the peaceful ambiance of Gangtey and the Phobjikha Valley.
Now, prepare to be enchanted as we journey towards the radiant Punakha Valley (1200m). Just a short two-hour drive unveils a landscape of golden valleys and captivating beauty.
- On the way, we'll explore the vibrant Wangduephodrang Dzong, perched high above the river confluence. Discover its strategic location, a testament to its commanding views of the valleys below.
- Experience the unique charm of Chimi Lhakhang, Temple of Fertility: a 15th-century temple with a fascinating history, known as a sacred pilgrimage site for those seeking blessings of fertility.
- Witness the grandeur of Punakha Dzong, a 17th-century masterpiece strategically placed at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, a symbol of Bhutan's religious and administrative heritage.
- As dusk descends, visit the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge, Bhutan's longest span, a 228-meter thrill ride with views that will steal your breath away.
Day 11
From golden fields to urban hills: Punakha to Thimphu
Following breakfast, we embark on a scenic two-hour drive to Thimphu (2300m), a journey punctuated by the breathtaking Dochula Pass (3140m). Prepare to be awestruck by the panoramic Himalayan views, a sight that will linger in your memory. Here, the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens stand as a silent tribute to fallen soldiers, a powerful reminder of courage and sacrifice.
We then continue to Thimphu, where the capital's wonders await:
- Witness the ancient art of Deh-sho papermaking at Traditional Paper Factory. Observe the complete process, from the use of Daphne and Dekap tree bark to the creation of these beautiful handmade papers.
- Create a unique and memorable souvenir by designing your own personalized stamp at the Bhutan Post Office.
After a satisfying lunch, we'll continue our cultural journey:
- We'll venture into the serene Takin Preserve Park, a natural sanctuary for Bhutan's national animal. Learn the fascinating legend of the Takin's origin, attributed to the 15th-century saint Drukpa Kuenlay, and observe these unique creatures in their natural habitat.
- Enjoy a delightful 4km (2-hour) hike to Wangditse Temple, one of Thimphu's easiest and most family-friendly trails. Traverse scenic paths through fragrant pine oak and rhododendron forests. Enjoy occasionally views of the Buddha Dordenma, Tashichoe Dzong, and the sweeping Thimphu Valley.
Conclude your day with a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Thimphu, soaking in the city's vibrant atmosphere.
Day 12
Along the river: Thimphu to Paro
Following the morning meal at the hotel, our itinerary includes a visit to:
- Prepare to be awestruck by the Buddha Dordenma, a magnificent 169-foot (52-meter) statue, one of the world's largest. From this vantage point, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Thimphu Valley.
We'll then hop into our comfortable vehicle and enjoy a beautiful drive to Paro (about 1.5 hours/50 Kms).
- We will stop at the historic Tachog Lhakhang, built by the legendary Thangtong Gyalpo, the "Iron Bridge Builder." The name Tachog literally means ‘Temple of the Hill of the Excellent Horse’.
- Upon arrival in Paro, we'll visit Ta Dzong, the National Museum of Bhutan, housed in a former watchtower. Explore its extensive collection of antique thangka paintings, textiles, weaponry, and historical artifacts.
Day 13
The farewell valley, Haa
Fuel up with a hearty breakfast, for today we journey to the secluded splendor of Haa Valley, the crowning jewel of our tour.
- Our drive takes us towards the majestic Chele La Pass (3,988m), Bhutan's highest motorable pass. Prepare to be swept away by the breathtaking panorama, where Paro and Haa valleys unfold beneath you like a living tapestry.
- Before descending, we'll embark on a scenic 30-minute hike, capturing the essence of Haa's untouched beauty.
- Our journey continues into the valley's heart, leading us to the remarkable Jungney Dra Lhakhang. This temple, a visual marvel perched atop a dramatic rocky mountain, perfectly encapsulates the rustic beauty of Haa Valley. The short yet rewarding 20-minute Jungney Dra Hike is an integral part of the Haa experience. As a place of profound spiritual significance, untouched by mass tourism, Jungney Dra Lhakhang stands as a truly exceptional and unforgettable destination in Haa Valley.
- As evening descends, we'll return to the familiar embrace of Paro Valley, carrying the memories of our final valley adventure.
Day 14
Farewell to the Dragon Kingdom
Now, it’s time to say goodbye to this magical place. Your guide and driver, who’ve been with you every step of the way, will take you to the international airport, sending you off with memories to last a lifetime.
