A Bhutanese “visa” is more than just a sticker in your passport; it is a gateway to their unique “High Value, Low Volume” tourism model.

As of 2026, the total cost to visit consists of two distinct parts: a fixed Visa Fee and a daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF).

The requirements vary significantly depending on whether you are an international traveler or a national of India, Bangladesh, or the Maldives.

1. International Tourists (All except India, Bangladesh, Maldives)

Most international visitors must obtain an e-Visa before arrival.

This is the most important part of Bhutanese travel. You must pay $100 USD per person, per night.

Note: Children aged 6–12 get a 50% discount ($50/night), and those under 6 are exempt.

A one-time, non-refundable fee of $40 USD.

  • A digital copy of a passport valid for at least 6 months from your departure date.
  • A recent digital passport-sized photo.
  • Proof of valid travel insurance for the duration of your trip.

Usually takes about 5 working days.

2. Visitors from India

Indian nationals do not need a “visa” but require an Entry Permit.

1,200 INR per person, per night.

Permits can be obtained online in advance or at the port of entry (like Phuentsholing or Paro Airport).

  • A valid Indian Passport or Voter Identity Card (issued by the Election Commission of India).
  • For children under 18, a Birth Certificate or Passport is required.
  • A recent passport-sized photo.

3. Visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives

Nationals of these two countries are eligible for a Visa on Arrival.

The standard rate of $100 USD per night applies (unless specific bilateral updates occur).

A valid passport (6 months validity) and a passport photo.

Important Note: The SDF is a government tax that funds free healthcare, education, and conservation in Bhutan. It does not cover your hotels, meals, transport, or guide services. You should budget an additional $150–$300+ per day for your actual travel expenses.
