Black-Necked Crane Festival
Each year on November 11th, coinciding with the birthday of Bhutan's fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, the Gangtey-Phobjikha valley hosts the Black-Necked Crane festival. This vibrant celebration, held in the courtyard of Gangtey Gonpa, welcomes the arrival of the majestic, Black-Necked Cranes.
Experience the thrill of mask dances and the elegance of crane imitations, all while celebrating the vital work of conservation. This is where community comes alive, where villagers unite in a shared adventure of celebration and preservation.

Itineraries
Day 1
Touching Down in Paro and Journeying to Thimphu
Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly Like Bhutan Travels representative, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We will then hop into our comfortable vehicle and enjoy a beautiful drive to Thimphu (about 1.5 hours/50 Kms), kicking off your amazing adventure.
- Along the route we’ll stop by the historic Tachog Lhakhang, built by the legendary Thangtong Gyalpo, the “Iron Bridge Builder”. The name Tachog literally means ‘Temple of the Hill of the Excellent Horse’.
- In Thimphu, explore the Craft Bazaar. This lively market, with its 80 quaint bamboo huts lining Norzin Lam, provides an authentic shopping experience and a deep immersion into local culture.
- Engage with the vibrant pulse of Thimphu, where farmers proudly display their organic treasures. Taste the sweetness of local honey, the earthy richness of mushrooms, and the genuine warmth of Bhutanese hospitality at the Bustling Farmers Vegetable Market
- Unravel the Secrets of Deh-sho at the Jungshi Hand-Made Paper Factory: Journey into the past and witness the delicate art of crafting traditional Bhutanese paper from the bark of the Daphne tree. Experience the timeless beauty of this ancient craft.

Day 2
Explore Thimphu's Hidden Wonders
- Reach New Heights at Buddha Point: Stand before the Buddha Dhordenma, a monument of peace and a testament to Bhutanese artistry. The completed work is one of the largest Buddha statue in the world at 169 feet (52m).
- Discover the Legend of the Takin: An enclosed area in the woods away from settlement houses, herds of takin and other rare animals and birds. Takin was declared as the national animal of Bhutan in 2005. The origins of takin’s dates back to 15 century, when Drukpa Kuenlay, a Tibetan saint, mystically created an animals, whose head resembled that of a goat, and body of cow.
- Engage with Bhutanese Culture at Simply Bhutan Museum: Experience the living traditions of Bhutan and support local entrepreneurs at this interactive museum.
- Unleash your creativity and design a personalized stamp at the Bhutan Post Office! Use your own pictures to craft the perfect, unforgettable souvenir.
- Challenge yourself with a rewarding 4km (2-hour) expedition to Wangditse Temple. This hike leads you through fragrant pine, oak and rhododendron forests. Conquer the trails and be rewarded with stunning views of the Buddha Dhordenma, Tashichoe Dzong, and the panoramic Thimphu Valley. Don't miss this adventure.
Day 3
A Journey to Gangtey
Today, we journey from the bustling heart of Thimphu to the tranquil sanctuary of Gangtey (130 Kms/4hours). Our ascent to Dochula Pass (3,088m) is a feast for the senses, with panoramic Himalayan views, vibrant prayer flags, and the aroma of steaming coffee. If the skies are clear, prepare to be awestruck by the towering Himalayan peaks.
- As we journey to Gangtey, witness the dramatic shift in landscape, from pine forests to alpine meadows. This valley, steeped in cultural richness, is the winter home of the Black-Necked Cranes.
- Arriving in Gangtey, explore the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, a place of spiritual serenity, and capture the beauty of its carvings and sculptures. Listen to the enchanting sound of temple bells calling the monks to prayer and perhaps join them in their sacred rituals.
- As evening falls, embark on the Gangtey Nature Hike (1 hour hike), a peaceful stroll through pine forests and bamboo, where you might witness the elegant dance of the cranes. Embrace the tranquility of Gangtey and the Phobjikha Valley.
- As dusk settles, witness the grace of these birds at the crane information center and meet the two rescued cranes who call the center home. Discover the inspiring stories of rescue and rehabilitation and forge a deeper connection with these majestic creatures.
Day 4
The Black-Necked Crane Festival
Anticipation fills the air as you join the Bhutanese in celebrating a beloved festival. Witness the pride and elegance of the locals as they wear their traditional 'Gho' and 'Kira,' each piece a testament to Bhutanese artistry at this year's Crane Festival. Witness a breathtaking display of color, music, and dance, a tradition deeply woven into the kingdom's spiritual and communal life for generations. From folk songs and crane-inspired dances to dramatic mask performances and environmental awareness pieces by school children, the festival offers a diverse cultural program. The program runs from mid-morning to late afternoon.
The festival's future depends on visitor support, which directly benefits local conservation efforts and economic stability. Community-managed funds from the festival are used for projects that benefit everyone. By participating, you contribute to this sustainable model.
As the evening unfolds, the Himalayan peaks in a golden hue, we carry the festival's vibrant memories with us, embarking on a two-hour drive to the enchanting Punakha Valley, a hidden gem awaiting our discovery.
Day 5
Discovering the Treasures of Punakha Valley
Begin your day bathed in the warm, golden light of Punakha's winter sunrise. After breakfast, we'll venture into the upper valley, where charming farmhouses dot the breathtaking landscape.
- A pleasant hour's walk will bring us to our destination: the stunning Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten where you’ll be captivated by both the temple’s exquisite detail and the sweeping views that unfold before you. This impressive 30-meter structure, a testament to Vajrayana Buddhism, showcases intricate paintings and the statue of deities, including one riding a legendary yeti. Arrive in the morning's cool embrace and find a moment to breathe in the valley's magnificent panorama.
- Post-hike, relish a serene riverside picnic, where good food meets perfect tranquility.
- Next, we will journey to Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century temple, where phallic symbols stand guard against unseen forces. The approach to the temple is as enchanting as the destination itself, a tranquil walk-through vibrant rice paddies and traditional villages.
- Then venture onto one of Bhutan’s most impressive suspension bridges, stretching 228 meters across the landscape. This unique experience will reward you with stunning postcards. perfect views of the valley’s lush scenery and the shimmering Pho Chu River, flowing directly from the glaciers.
- As dusk settles, prepare to be awestruck by Punakha Dzong, the winter residence of the Je Khenpo and his vast monastic community. This sprawling fortress, second only in size and age, pulsates with administrative and spiritual life, and holds a legendary story waiting to be discovered.
Day 6
From Valley Views to Dzong Discoveries: Punakha to Paro
Our adventure today starts with a peaceful ascent to Sangchen Nunnery, where you can admire the serene, whitewashed stupa and the stunning valley views. More importantly, you'll have the opportunity for enriching conversations with the English-speaking nuns, offering a unique cultural exchange.
- Then embark on a scenic 3–4-hour drive back to Paro, descending from Dochula Pass and tracing the dramatic river valleys.
- Upon arrival in Paro, we’ll visit Ta Dzong, the National Museum of Bhutan, housed in a former watchtower. Explore its extensive collection of antique thangka paintings, textiles, weaponry, and historical artifacts.
- A short walk downhill leads to Rinpung Dzong, the Fortress of the Heap of Jewels. Discover its captivating history and admire the intricate wall paintings depicting Buddhist lore, including scenes from the life of Milarepa.
Day 7
The Majestic Tiger's Nest - A Pilgrimage to Taktsang
Prepare for an unforgettable day as we embark on a 5–6-hours hike to Bhutan's crown jewel, the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Lhakhang). This iconic site, perched dramatically 600 meters above Paro Valley, is one of the kingdom's most sacred.
Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche's arrival atop a tigress, meditating in a cave that has since become a revered pilgrimage destination. Experience the spiritual aura of this breathtaking monastery, clinging impossibly to the cliffside.
- After your descent, relax and rejuvenate with a traditional hot stone bath, easing any lingering fatigue.
- In the evening, immerse yourself in the local culture by exploring Paro town and its vibrant market.
- Tonight, we share a final, special dinner at a homestay, creating lasting memories with your guide and driver, who have journeyed beside you, not just as guides, but as friends.
Day 8
Farewell to the Dragon Kingdom
Now, it’s time to say goodbye to this magical place. Your guide and driver, who’ve been with you every step of the way, will take you to the international airport, sending you off with memories to last a lifetime.
