Soi Yaktsa Trek
For an unforgettable 7-day adventure in Bhutan, explore the Yaktsa Trek, a route prized for its access to Jangothang and the stunning Mount Jomolhari viewpoint. This trek unveils some of Bhutan's most spectacular high-altitude landscapes and offers a fascinating insight into the world of Yak herders. This trek takes you across the picturesque turquoise Tshophu Lake (at 4380m) and over the Bhonte La pass (reaching 4890m) before descending to Drukgyal Dzong. Additionally, the vista from the Thombu La pass (4380m) on the penultimate day, showcasing the beautiful white Kanchenjunga range in Sikkim, is a truly worthwhile experience.

Itineraries
Day 1
Arrival in Paro and Explore the Valley
Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly guide, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We will then hop into our comfortable vehicle and drive to your hotel.
- Following lunch, explore Ta Dzong, a former 17th-century watchtower that protected Rinpung Dzong during inter-valley conflicts. Transformed into Bhutan's National Museum in 1968, it now houses a remarkable collection of antique thangka paintings, textiles, weaponry, and historical artifacts.
- A short walk downhill leads to Rinpung Dzong, the Fortress of the Heap of Jewels. Discover its captivating history and admire the intricate wall paintings depicting Buddhist lore, including scenes from the life of Milarepa.
- Following the visit to the Dzong, we'll walk down to one of Bhutan's oldest cantilever bridges, cross it, and be picked up by our vehicle on the other side.
Day 2
Acclimatization Hike to Taktsang Monastery
Prior to our 6-day trek, we'll undertake an acclimatization hike to Tiger's Nest today. This revered Buddhist site, perched dramatically on a cliff at approximately 3100 m (10,000 ft), was built in 1692 and holds immense spiritual importance for the Bhutanese. The name ‘Tiger’s Nest’ originates from the legend of Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have arrived here on a tigress in the 8th century and meditated within its caves."

Day 3
Shana - Thangthangkha (Trek Starts)
20KM | 8-9 HOURS | 900M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 3750M
The first day of the trek trail follows the Pa Chhu (Paro River), ascending and descending through pine, oak, and spruce forests.
- After a 2-hour hike with several stream crossings, we reach Shingkharap, a stone house at 3110m, where a hot lunch awaits after crossing the bridge to the left.
- Just beyond, at a trail junction, we take the right path over a wooden bridge (the left is an old trade route to Tibet).
- A climb through rhododendron forests and a final bridge crossing leads us to our campsite at 3750m, situated in beautiful meadows.
Day 4
Soi Thangkha to Jangothang base camp (Trek Day 2)
17KM | 4-5 HOURS | 290M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 4040M
While today's trek isn't lengthy, prepare for a considerable ascent as the trail climbs above the treeline.
- From our camp, the path ascends steadily until we reach the army camp. Beyond this point, we'll follow the river, now traversing the open landscape above the trees, where breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks unfold.
- Our journey will take us through a notably muddy section of the trail, past a sacred mani wall, and into the grazing lands of yaks.
- Our midday break will be a unique cultural experience: a hot lunch served inside a traditional yak herder's camp.
- After lunch, we'll walk by the yak herder settlements of Soe and Takethang, where barley, potatoes, and turnips are commonly grown.
Our final stretch involves crossing a plateau and walking up a stream bed to reach Dangochang village and the incredible Jangothang campsite at 4040m. Here, you'll be rewarded with truly superb vistas of the iconic Mount Jumolhari and the impressive Jichu Drake.
Day 5
Acclimatization Day and Exploration at Jangothang (Trek Day 3)
Today offers an important four-hour acclimatization hike north of our camp.
- While there isn't a defined trail, we'll ascend an open and seemingly endless slope, rewarded by our first breathtaking view of the majestic Mt. Jichu Drakye (6989m). Keep a keen eye out for the elusive blue sheep, the unique Himalayan rhubarb, soaring griffon vultures, magnificent golden eagles, and the iconic blue poppy. Jangothang base camp is a flat, grassy area featuring the scenic ruins of an old fortress on a small hill, all framed by the immense Mount Jumolhari and Jitchu Drake.
- As this altitude often brings on symptoms of mountain sickness, we strongly advise everyone to take a day to rest and acclimatize here. Whether you decide to unwind in camp, enjoying the incredible views, or take a leisurely exploration of the surroundings, today promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Day 6
Jangothang to Soi Yaksa (Trek Day 4)
16KM | 6-7 HOURS | 810M ASCENT | 1090M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 3800M
We continue our trek north, making our way to the last village in the valley and then descending to cross the Paro Chhu (River) on a sturdy wooden bridge.
- Our path then leads us uphill to the breathtaking turquoise Tshophu Lake (4380 meters), where you're likely to see ruddy shelducks.
- As we ascend a slope to reach its crest, another beautiful lake will come into view, adding to the scenic wonders of our journey.
- Next, we descend into a hidden valley and then make a steep climb to Bonte La at 4890m, the trek's highest point offering stunning views of Basingthang (5500m) and Chatarake (5570m).
- After the pass, the trail descends, weaving through yak trails to the Dhumzo Chhu. A downstream walk past a few houses leads us to our camp at 3800 meters.
Day 7
Soi Yaksa to Thombu Shong (Trek Day 5)
11KM | 4-5 HOURS | 720M ASCENT | 340M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4180M
Today, we climb from the camp through moss-covered rhododendron, birch, and oak forests to a meadow with large Juniper trees.
- Reaching the ridge's shoulder, we'll walk directly into a beautiful valley with a couple of Yak Herders' camps.
- We'll have lunch shortly after leaving the Yak Herders' campsite, followed by a steep hour-long climb to the pass. The pristine Thombushong campsite is visible from the pass.
- For those trekking in May or June, this location offers a fantastic opportunity to spot Takins, Bhutan's national animal, as it lies directly on their migratory path.
Day 8
Thombu Shong to Gunitsawa to Thimphu (Trek Day 6)
13KM | 4-5 HOURS | 200M ASCENT | 1650M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 2730M
Our last day trek begins with a climb out of the valley, ascending through vibrant rhododendron forests until we reach Thombu La at an elevation of 4380m.
- On a clear day, the pass offers a truly rewarding spectacle: magnificent views of some himalayan mountains.
- From the pass, the trail descends gradually to around 4000m, then switchbacks down the ridge, ultimately leading us to the helipad at Gunitsawa (2730m).
- Your transport will be readily waiting here to greet you. Relax and enjoy the scenic drive back to Thimphu, where the simple pleasure of a refreshing shower at the hotel awaits, marking your comfortable return to civilization.
Day 9
Thimphu Sightseeing
Get ready to discover the Thimphu Valley after a satisfying breakfast.
- Our journey takes us to the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, a colossal 169-foot statue. Prepare to be moved by the profound tranquility emanating from this golden icon, one of the largest Buddha statues on Earth.
- As the day continues, awaken your senses at Simply Bhutan Museum. This living museum offers an authentic, hands-on experience, where you can not only witness but also participate in the rich traditions and diverse heritage of Bhutan. Plus, capture the moment with a traditional photo session.
- After lunch Visit the Jungshi Hand-Made Paper Factory in Thimphu to witness the unique art of 'Deh-sho' production, where you'll learn how traditional Bhutanese paper is made from the bark of the Daphne tree using ancient technique in this modern world.
- Step into the heart of Bhutanese artistry at the Craft Bazaar towards evening, a vibrant hub where you can immerse yourself in local culture and discover exquisite, Bhutan-made crafts. This unique market, featuring approximately 80 charming bamboo huts lining Norzin Lam, offers a truly authentic shopping experience.
- Savor the Flavors of Local Life at the Bustling Farmers Vegetable Market: Engage with the vibrant pulse of Thimphu, where farmers proudly display their organic treasures. Taste the sweetness of local honey, the earthy richness of mushrooms, and the genuine warmth of Bhutanese hospitality.
- The evening is free for you to explore Thimphu independently.
Day 10
Punakha Awaits - Dzongs, Bridges, and Ancient Blessings
As the morning mist lifts, we begin our journey towards a hidden gem: Punakha’s golden valley. A mere two-hour drive, and a world of wonder awaits.
- On the way to Punakha, we'll stop at Dochula Pass (3,088 m), a sensory delight. Enjoy the sweeping Himalayan views, the sight of fluttering prayer flags, and the comforting aroma of coffee. With clear skies, the majestic peaks will leave you speechless.
- Our journey to Punakha includes a stop at the vibrant Wangduephodrang Dzong, perched high above the river confluence. Discover its strategic location, a testament to its commanding views of the valleys below.
- Towards the evening visit Punakha Dzong a River Confluence Marvel: Witness the grandeur of Punakha Dzong, a 17th century masterpiece strategically placed at the junction of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, a symbol of Bhutan’s religious and administrative heritage.
- Dusk descends, and the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge calls! Cross Bhutan’s longest span, a 228- meter thrill ride with views that will steal your breath away.
Day 11
Punakha Valley Exploration
Begin your day bathed in the warm, golden light of Punakha’s sunrise. After breakfast, we’ll venture into the upper valley, where charming farmhouses dot the breathtaking landscape.
- A pleasant hour’s walk will bring us to our destination: the stunning Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten where you’ll be captivated by both the temple’s exquisite detail and the sweeping views that unfold before you. This impressive 30-meter structure, a testament to Vajrayana Buddhism, showcases intricate paintings and the statue of deities, including one riding a legendary yeti. Arrive in the morning’s cool embrace, and find a moment to breathe in the Valley’s magnificent panorama.
- After our refreshing hike, we'll pause for a truly yummy break. Today's lunch will be a lovely picnic right by the soothing river.
- Towards evening,we will visit The Temple of Fertility: Experience the unique charm of Chimi Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple with a fascinating history, known as a sacred pilgrimage site for those seeking blessings of fertility.
Day 12
Paro Valley
Following our time in Punakha, we'll enjoy a picturesque 3–4-hour drive back to Paro, descending from Dochula Pass and winding through stunning river valleys.
- If you feel wonderfully energized, we could consider a trek to Lungchutse Temple (3570m) at Dochula Pass. This four hours hike, through hemlock and more rhododendrons, is often recommended as one of Bhutan's best, leading us to the beautiful Trashigang Goenpa and Lungchutse Temple. On a clear day, the Himalayan peaks offer a truly breathtaking backdrop from top. Upon our arrival in Paro, the evening will be free for you to unwind. Feel free to explore the downtown area for shopping, relax with a local coffee at a town cafe, or simply enjoy the tranquility of your hotel room.
- Tonight, we share a final, special dinner at a home-stay, creating lasting memories with your guide and driver, who have journeyed beside you, not just as guides, but as friends.
Day 13
The Last Horizon - Bhutan to Home
