Punakha Tshechu - A Sacred Festival of Faith, History, and Blessings
Embark on a profound journey into the heart of Bhutanese heritage with the Punakha Tshechu, a festival that stands as a vibrant testament to the nation's spiritual resilience and historical triumph. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Punakha Dzong, the "Palace of Great Happiness", the festivities unfold at the scenic confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
While most Bhutanese festivals honor Guru Rinpoche, the Punakha Tshechu holds a unique place in the national identity, specifically commemorating Bhutan’s 17th-century victory over invading Tibetan forces. This victory preserved the sovereignty of the kingdom and the sacred relics that remain central to the faith today.
The Punakha Tshechu is held annually on the 10th day of the first month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar, typically falling between February and March annually. The festival lasts for three days, with celebrations beginning in the morning around 9:00 AM and continuing until late afternoon, with intervals for prayers and rest. Joining this tour offers a rare opportunity to witness a living history where ancient battles are reenacted, and the "Palace of Great Happiness" comes alive with the colors, sounds, and soul of the Dragon Kingdom.
