Bumthang Ura Festival - Ura Yakchoe

In the heart of Bhutan, the people of Ura Valley celebrate its lovely summer festival known as the Ura Yakchoe, a religious festival that honors yaks in Bumthang. It is one of the most intimate and authentic festivals in Bhutan. Held in the high-altitude Ura Valley (3,100 meters) in Bumthang, it feels less like a performance for tourists and more like a large, warm family gathering of an entire village. Yakchoe" has two meanings.

Locally, it is often translated as "Good Offering" (Yagpo meaning good, Choepa meaning offering), referring to the gratitude shown to the deity. However, it also has roots in pre-Buddhist "Bon" rituals where offerings were made to the Cattle God (Yak Lha) to protect the village livestock.

The festival features both mask and folk dances, and the display of a sacred relic, allowing people to receive blessings. Each spring, the Ura Yakchoe Festival is held for five days. The exact dates change yearly, as they are based on the Bhutanese lunar calendar, but it is typically celebrated around May.
