Itineraries
Day 1
The Dragon's Welcome: A Thimphu Sanctuary
Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly Like Bhutan Travels representative, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We'll then hop into our comfortable vehicle and enjoy a beautiful drive to Thimphu (about 1.5 hours/50 Kms), kicking off your amazing adventure.
Note: Please be aware that afternoon arrivals may necessitate adjustments to the itinerary. Certain destinations may need to be omitted to accommodate the reduced available time. This will be discussed in detail during the booking process to ensure a clear understanding of potential modifications.
- Your adventure in Thimphu starts with a visit to the Simply Bhutan Museum. A living museum and a photo studio with a mission to preserve, promote and showcase the Bhutanese tradition and cultural diversity.
- We will then witness the awe-inspiring Buddha Dhordenma, a colossal statue offering panoramic views of the Thimphu valley. The completed work is one of the largest Buddha statue in the world at 169 feet (52m).
- Embark on a gentle 4km (2-hour) acclimatization hike to Wangditse Temple, a perfect introduction to Bhutan's trails. Breathe in the crisp, pine-scented air as you wander through lush forests, past charming apple orchards, and beneath canopies of oak and rhododendron. Glimpse stunning, occasional views of the majestic Buddha Dordenma, the iconic Tashichoe Dzong, and the sprawling Thimphu Valley. This delightful trek prepares you beautifully for the adventures ahead.
Day 2
From Thimphu's Vibrant Heart to Phajoding's Mountain Solitude
Awaken your spirit with a nourishing breakfast, preparing for a transformative journey to the sacred Phajoding Monastery. At 3640 meters, this is where the mountains meet the divine. Seeking solace and a profound connection with nature? The Phajoding hike, a 5km, 3–4-hour ascent, will lead you there. Though the trail climbs with determination, rest assured, serene resting spots with canopies and benches await. Phajoding, a sprawling complex of holy buildings, stands as a beacon of Buddhist wisdom, housing a State Monastic School where young monks dedicate their lives to spiritual learning. Capture a moment with those monks, soak in the profound peace, and if your spirit still yearns for adventure, explore the hidden lakes and Thujeydra beyond.
- After the hike and on the way to hotel, Later, we'll explore the Takin Preserve Park, an enclosed area in the woods away from settlement houses, herds of takin and other rare animals and birds. Takin was declared as the national animal of Bhutan in 2005. The origins of takin’s dates back to 15 century, when Drukpa Kuenlay, a Tibetan saint, mystically created an animals, whose head resembled that of a goat, and body of cow.
Day 3
Journey to Punakha: A Lungchutse Trek Amidst Mountain Views
Our journey from Thimphu to Punakha Valley (74km, approx. 2 hours) is filled with breathtaking scenery and cultural immersion. On the way:
- Embark on a truly unforgettable journey with the Lungchutse hike, setting forth from the peaceful Tashigang Goempa. As you ascend through verdant forests, glimpses of vibrant rhododendrons and the serene Thimphu landscape unfold. A steady 2-hour climb culminates at the sacred Lungchutse Monastery (3566 meters), perched high above Dochula Pass. Founded in the 18th century by the revered Terton Drukda Dorji, this mountaintop sanctuary rewards your efforts with an awe-inspiring panorama of the majestic Himalayan peaks. From this vantage, a captivating descent of roughly 1.5 hours commences, leading you towards Dochula. Witness dramatic shifts in scenery as you traverse varying altitudes, each step revealing the region's diverse flora and fauna. The journey concludes at the iconic Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens stand as silent sentinels, marking a perfect and rejuvenating end to this visually stunning pilgrimage.
- Arriving in Punakha, we'll visit Chimi Lhakhang, a temple steeped in legend and revered for its fertility blessings.
- We'll then explore Punakha Dzong, a 17th-century masterpiece at the confluence of two rivers, and the former capital of Bhutan.
- Finally, we'll experience the thrill of crossing the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge (228m), with stunning views of the dzong and valley.
Day 4
Gangtey's Call - Longtey Hike Through Nature's Masterpiece
Today, we embark on a captivating journey through Punakha to Gangtey. A 75km, 2-hour drive will lead us through breathtaking landscapes. Nestled in the heart of Bhutan, the expansive Gangtey Valley, unfolds as a breathtaking glacial landscape, a true jewel of the kingdom. This serene valley transforms into a winter sanctuary for the majestic, black-necked cranes, who grace its meadows with their presence from late October to mid-February, arriving annually from the Tibetan plateau.
On the way to Gangtey embark on a captivating prelude: the Longtey Rhododendron Hike. Picture this: a 3–4-hour trek beginning in the quaint village of Longtey (3300m), where you'll witness the daily rhythms of Bhutanese life – farmers at work, weavers crafting their stories in thread. Especially in spring, this trail transforms into a floral masterpiece, as rhododendrons burst into a symphony of color. We'll follow a path that crosses a gentle stream, then ascends through bamboo groves to the Thou La Pass, a vantage point offering breathtaking views of Gangtey Goemba and the valley's serene embrace. From the pass, we'll descend towards the idyllic Kumbu village (2900m), where a pick-up awaits, or if your spirit desires, continue your descent to the Shedra or the valley floor, each step a deeper immersion into Bhutan's enchanting heart.
- Upon arrival at Gangtey, immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, admiring its intricate carvings and listening to the rhythmic chanting of monks.
- In the evening, a gentle 1-hour nature hike through fragrant pine and bamboo forests offers the chance to spot these graceful birds (during winter).
- As dusk settles, witness the grace of these birds at the crane information center and meet the two rescued cranes who call the center home. Discover the inspiring stories of rescue and rehabilitation and forge a deeper connection with these majestic creatures.
Day 5
Paro Bound - Leaving Gangtey Behind
Embark on a captivating journey today as we traverse the scenic five-hour route from Gangtey to the enchanting Paro Valley. Prepare to be mesmerized by Paro, a treasure trove of ancient Bhutanese monasteries and temples.
- Our adventure begins with a refreshing stop at the Royal Botanical Park, Lamperi, Bhutan's pioneering botanical sanctuary, spanning a vast 120 square kilometers.
- Upon reaching Paro, we'll step back in time at Ta Dzong, the National Museum, a former watchtower brimming with cultural wonders – vibrant thangkas, intricate textiles, and historical artifacts.
- Finally, a short stroll will lead us to the awe-inspiring Rinpung Dzong, the 'Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,' where breathtaking Buddhist murals and centuries of history await.
Day 6
Bumdra Hike - Awake to adventure
Fuel up with a hearty breakfast, adventurers, because today we conquer the ascent to Bumdra! (3 hours hke) Prepare for an unforgettable night under the stars, nestled high in the mountains.
- From the ancient stones of Sangchoekor Monastery, we'll embark on a journey of self-discovery, climbing through forests that hold the secrets of centuries. Our lunch break at Chhoe Tse Lhakang is more than just a meal; it's a moment of revelation. Picture yourself gazing upon the Paro Valley, a tapestry of greens and blues, while the Himalayas rise like silent guardians. This sacred site, steeped in dakini lore, invites you to connect with something larger than yourself. As we ascend towards Bumdra (3800m), the landscape transforms, the air grows crisp, and the world opens up. Our campsite, a sanctuary in the sky, welcomes us with warm towels and comfortable chairs, a space to simply breathe and absorb the sheer majesty of the place. Those seeking a deeper connection can venture to the sky burial sites, a journey into the heart of the mountain's mystery. As evening descends, we'll gather for a shared meal, a moment of camaraderie under the vast, star-studded sky, before retreating to our luxurious tents, a private space in the wilderness.
Day 7
Into the Realm of Legends: The Tiger's Nest Awaits.
Awake to the dawn's embrace at Bumdra! This morning, we rise before the sun to witness a spectacle: a breathtaking sunrise painting the mountain peaks. Weather permitting, it's a vision that will forever be etched in your memory. Savor the moment with a steaming coffee as the first rays of light illuminate the landscape, followed by a hearty breakfast to fuel our descent. Our journey takes a mystical turn as we first explore the Bumdra temple, a place whispered to house a thousand dakini footprints, etched within a sacred cave. Then, the real adventure begins: a thrilling descent towards the legendary Taktsang Monastery.
- For 2 hours, we'll zigzag through ancient forests of pine and rhododendron, a tapestry of nature's grandeur. Along the way, we'll encounter sanctuaries of solitude: Zangtopelri Lhakhang, perched high with valley-sweeping views; Yoselgang, a haven for three-year retreats; and a hidden Lhakhang clinging to a cliff face, accessed by a daring metal staircase. Finally, Taktsang emerges, a vision that steals your breath, a monastery defying gravity. We'll explore its sacred halls, a climb through time and devotion. Our journey's reward: a well-deserved lunch at the Taktsang café, where panoramic views of this iconic wonder unfold before us.
