Royal Highland Festival: A Tribute to Highland Culture in Bhutan’s Remote Mountains
The Royal Highland Festival, initiated by the 5th King in 2016, takes place annually in Laya Village, located in Gasa Dzongkhag at an altitude of approximately 4000 meters. The selection of Laya as the festival's location directly reflects its purpose: to honor the extraordinary culture, traditions, sustainable living, and resilience of the remote highland communities, including yak herders and nomadic groups, who successfully navigate the harsh realities of high-altitude life
Attendees at the festival can enjoy a wide array of cultural programs presented by the Layaps. Highlights include competitions that showcase the unique qualities of highland animals, such as yaks, horses, and mastiffs, as well as captivating displays of traditional songs and dances. The Visitors can also explore a series of stalls offering a range of local highland products, including yak produce, agricultural and technological displays, and medicinal herbs and plants.
Reaching Laya Village requires a multi-stage journey that involves traveling by car to Gasa, switching to a 4WD vehicle for the journey to the road's end, and completing the final leg with a roughly 2-hours uphill trek. As an annual event, the Royal Highland Festival is consistently celebrated on October 23 and 24.

Moreover, it's a celebration of the inherent beauty in the Highlanders' unpretentious way of life, shared with all who attend. The first day festival showcases a range of captivating events, including the traditional Buelwa gift offering accompanied by Auley, an epic poem/song recitation rooted in the time of Zhabdrung Rinpoche.
This moving ritual demonstrates the Laya community's deep loyalty and respect for the visionary leadership of their monarchs. Immerse yourself in the Layaps culture with a diverse program of traditional songs, dances, and exhilarating competitions featuring highland animals like yaks, horses, and mastiffs. And that's just a glimpse – the festival offers a wealth of additional performances to captivate you.
Day 6
Royal Highland Festival Day 2
On the second day, we'll have ample opportunity to immerse ourselves fully in the festival's exciting activities. Alternatively, you can choose to explore the charming Laya village and connect with its residents, gaining a unique glimpse into life in this secluded region. With just around 110 houses, Laya Village stands as one of Bhutan's most remote communities. The Layap people possess a unique cultural identity, evident in their dialect, traditional practices, and distinctive clothing. The women, in particular, are recognized for their long hair and conical bamboo hats topped with a spike.
This region is also the origin of the highly prized Cordyceps sinensis, a testament to the village's unique natural wealth. A short walk from the village leads to a collection of sacred lakes—Kharkhil Tscho, Paro Tsho, and Oneme Tsho—where you'll be enveloped by breathtaking scenery: vibrant meadows framing crystal-clear waters, offering a profound sense of peace.
Day 7
Laya to Gasa
With hearts full of memories from two precious days in Laya, we begin our farewell trek, following the well-worn trail that led us to this enchanting place. The path, now a familiar friend, guides us through gradual descents and gentle inclines, offering a second chance to absorb the awe-inspiring beauty of the river's powerful flow and the cascades' thunderous grace. Finally, from Kohi Lapcha, we descend to our awaiting vehicle, which will carry us back to Gasa and have a peaceful night at a local farmhouse, carrying the essence of Laya within us.
Our arrival in Gasa marks the beginning of our exploration of Gasa Dzong, a monument steeped in history. Constructed by Zhabdrung in 1646 to commemorate triumphs over Tibet and safeguard the region from invasions, it holds immense cultural significance. The locals refer to it as Tashi Thongmon Dzong, honoring their protecting deity. Dzong’s distinct circular architecture and strategically placed watchtowers, set against the stunning panorama of Mount Gang boom on clear days, offer a truly unforgettable sight. For a relaxing end to the day, consider a visit to the Gasa hot springs, which are just a short distance from the farmhouse.
