From April 22nd to 24th, Bhutan honors its extraordinary rhododendron diversity at its annual festival. Home to a remarkable 46 distinct species, this event offers a rare glimpse into one of the world's richest floral ecosystems.

Itineraries

Day 1

Landing in Paro, Entering Royal Thimphu

Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly Like Bhutan Travels representative, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We'll then hop into our comfortable vehicle and enjoy a beautiful drive to Thimphu (about 1.5 hours/50 Kms), kicking off your amazing adventure.

  • After a scrumptious lunch, awaken your senses at Simply Bhutan Museum. This living museum offers an authentic, hands-on experience, where you can not only witness but also participate in the rich traditions and diverse heritage of Bhutan. Plus, capture the moment with a traditional photo session.
  • Witness the Mastery of Ancient Crafts at the Zorig Chusum Institute: Delve into the world of Bhutan's 13 traditional arts, where around 6 traditional arts breathe life into age-old techniques. Observe the intricate artistry of painting, carving, and weaving, a testament to Bhutan's rich heritage.
  • The Bustling Farmers' Market: Immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of local life. Mingle with friendly farmers, sample organic treasures, and discover the authentic flavors of Bhutan.

Day 2

Explore Thimphu's Heights and Hidden Wonders

Today, we'll uncover the secrets of Thimphu, from towering statues to enchanting nature trails.

  • Reach New Heights at Buddha Point: Stand before the colossal Buddha Dhordenma, a monument of peace and a testament to Bhutanese artistry. The completed work is one of the largest Buddha statue in the world at 169 feet (52m).
  • Discover the Legend of the Takin: An enclosed area in the woods away from settlement houses, herds of takin and other rare animals and birds. Takin was declared as the national animal of Bhutan in 2005. The origins of takin’s dates back to 15 century, when Drukpa Kuenlay, a Tibetan saint, mystically created an animals, whose head resembled that of a goat, and body of cow. 
  • Challenge yourself with a rewarding 4km (2-hour) expedition to Wangditse Temple! This invigorating hike leads you through fragrant pine forests, past quaint apple farms, and into a tapestry of oak and rhododendron. Conquer the trails and be rewarded with stunning, intermittent views of the Buddha Dhordenma, Tashichoe Dzong, and the panoramic Thimphu Valley. Don't miss this adventure.
  • Unleash your creativity and design a personalized stamp at the Bhutan Post Office! Use your own pictures to craft the perfect, unforgettable souvenir.
  • Towards the evening, discover the Secrets of Deh-sho at the Jungshi Hand-Made Paper Factory: Journey into the past and witness the delicate art of crafting traditional Bhutanese paper from the bark of the Daphne tree. Experience the timeless beauty of this ancient craft.

Day 3

Blossoms and Beyond - The Rhododendron Festival

Today, we journey from Thimphu to the beautiful Punakha Valley (74km, approx. 2 hours), with a memorable stop at Dochula Pass. This scenic pass offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas and the poignant 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in honor of fallen soldiers.

A scenic fifteen-minute descent from the majestic Dochula Pass will lead us to the Royal Botanical Park, Lampelri, where the vibrant Rhododendron Festival awaits.

  • The Rhododendron Festival explodes with the vibrant energy of spring, unveiling a breathtaking panorama of blooming rhododendrons against Bhutan's emerald forests. This is your invitation to witness nature's grand spectacle, while simultaneously delving into the heart of local life. Experience the soul-stirring beauty of the flowers, the rich flavors of regional cuisine, and the captivating performances that showcase the deep connection between the Bhutanese people and their natural sanctuary.
  • Upon arrival in Punakha, we will visit Chimi Lhakhang, the 15th-century temple, where phallic symbols stand guard against unseen forces. The approach to the temple is as enchanting as the destination itself, a tranquil walk-through vibrant rice paddies and traditional villages.

Day 4

Punakha to Gangtey

Dive into the heart of Punakha Valley today, embarking on an adventure that will awaken your senses.

  • After breakfast, we'll venture onto one of Bhutan's most impressive suspension bridges, stretching 228 meters across the landscape. This unique experience will reward you with stunning, postcard-perfect views of the valley's lush scenery and the shimmering Pho Chu River, flowing directly from the glaciers.
  • Prepare to be awestruck by Punakha Dzong, the winter residence of the Je Khenpo and his vast monastic community. This sprawling fortress, second only in size and age, pulsates with administrative and spiritual life, and holds a legendary story waiting to be discovered.
  • After lunch, prepare for a captivating 2.5-hour drive to Gangtey. This 74-kilometer route, ascending from Wangdue, traces the dramatic contours of the river valleys, promising a visual feast at every turn.

Day 5

Gangtey's Farewell, Paro's Promise

This morning, we'll begin by deepening our understanding of the region at the Black-necked Cranes Information Center, where fascinating displays illuminate the lives of these rare birds and meet the two rescued cranes who call the center home. Discover the inspiring stories of rescue and rehabilitation and forge a deeper connection with these majestic creatures.

  • Following this enriching experience, we'll embark on a gentle, hour-long hike along the Gangtey Nature Trail, winding through serene pine forests, bamboo groves, and picturesque farmland.
  • Explore the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, a place of spiritual serenity, and capture the beauty of its carvings and sculptures. Listen to the enchanting sound of temple bells calling the monks to prayer and perhaps join them in their sacred rituals.
  • Following lunch, we'll begin our scenic 5-hour journey to Paro, a 170-kilometer drive that traverses the breathtaking Lawala Pass (3250m) and the iconic Dochula Pass (3100m), offering panoramic views along the way.

Day 6

The Majestic Tiger's Nest - A Pilgrimage to Taktsang

Prepare for an unforgettable day as we embark on a 5–6-hours hike to Bhutan's crown jewel, the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Lhakhang). This iconic site, perched dramatically 600 meters above Paro Valley, is one of the kingdom's most sacred.

Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche's arrival atop a tigress, meditating in a cave that has since become a revered pilgrimage destination. Experience the spiritual aura of this breathtaking monastery, clinging impossibly to the cliffside.

  • After your descent, relax and rejuvenate with a traditional hot stone bath, easing any lingering fatigue.
  • In the evening, immerse yourself in the local culture by exploring Paro town and its vibrant market.
  • Tonight, we share a final, special dinner at a homestay, creating lasting memories with your guide and driver, who have journeyed beside you, not just as guides, but as friends.

Day 7

Farewell to the Dragon Kingdom

Now, it’s time to say goodbye to this magical place. Your guide and driver, who’ve been with you every step of the way, will take you to the international airport, sending you off with memories to last a lifetime.
