Itineraries

Day 1

Touching Down in Paro and Journeying to Thimphu

Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly Like Bhutan Travels representative, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We'll then hop into our comfortable vehicle and enjoy a beautiful drive to Thimphu (about 1.5 hours/50 Kms), kicking off your amazing adventure.

  • Our first stop is the historic Tachog Lhakhang, built by the legendary Thangtong Gyalpo, the "Iron Bridge Builder." The name Tachog literally means ‘Temple of the Hill of the Excellent Horse’.
  • Immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of the Farmers' Vegetable Market, where you can sample local produce and meet friendly vendors.

Day 2

Explore Thimphu's Heights and Hidden Wonders

Today, we will discover the many tales this capital city holds.

  • The Vibrant Craft Bazaar: Discover handcrafted treasures and support local artisans in this bustling marketplace.
  • Reach New Heights at Buddha Point: Stand before the Buddha Dhordenma, a monument of peace and a testament to Bhutanese artistry. The completed work is one of the largest Buddha statue in the world at 169 feet (52m).
  • Discover the Legend of the Takin: An enclosed area in the woods away from settlement houses, herds of takin and other rare animals and birds. Takin was declared as the national animal of Bhutan in 2005. The origins of takin’s dates back to 15 century, when Drukpa Kuenlay, a Tibetan saint, mystically created an animals, whose head resembled that of a goat, and body of cow. 
  • Engage with Bhutanese Culture at Simply Bhutan Museum: Experience the living traditions of Bhutan and support local entrepreneurs at this interactive museum.
  • Challenge yourself with a rewarding 4km (2-hour) expedition to Wangditse Temple. This hike leads you through fragrant pine, oak and rhododendron forests. Conquer the trails and be rewarded with stunning views of the Buddha Dhordenma, Tashichoe Dzong, and the panoramic Thimphu Valley. Don't miss this adventure.
  • If schedules align, we'll attend an archery match at Changlimithang Stadium in the evening. This thrilling display of Bhutan's national sport allows for interaction with locals and a deeper cultural understanding.

Day 3

A Journey to Gangtey: Where Mountains Whisper and Cranes Dance

Today, we journey from the bustling heart of Thimphu to the tranquil sanctuary of Gangtey (130 Kms/4 hours). Our ascent to Dochula Pass (3,088m) is a feast for the senses, with panoramic Himalayan views, vibrant prayer flags, and the aroma of steaming coffee. If the skies are clear, prepare to be awestruck by the towering Himalayan peaks.

  • As we journey to Gangtey, witness the dramatic shift in landscape from pine forests to alpine meadows. This valley, steeped in cultural richness, is the winter home of the Black-Necked Cranes.
  • Explore the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, a place of spiritual serenity, and capture the beauty of its carvings and sculptures. Listen to the enchanting sound of temple bells calling the monks to prayer and perhaps join them in their sacred rituals.
  • As evening falls, embark on the Gangtey Nature Hike (1-hour hike), a peaceful stroll through pine forests and bamboo, where you might witness the elegant dance of the cranes during winter. Embrace the tranquility of Gangtey and the Phobjikha Valley.
  • As dusk settles, witness the grace of these birds at the crane information center and meet the two rescued cranes who call the center home. Discover the inspiring stories of rescue and rehabilitation and forge a deeper connection with these majestic creatures.

Day 4

Into Bumthang's Sacred Realm - Gangtey to the Spiritual Heart of Bhutan

Before our journey to Bumthang, we're plunging into the wild heart of Gangtey. This morning, we'll conquer the ancient Longtey Rhododendron Trail, a forgotten path once used by locals and yak herders.

For three hours, we'll ascend from the serene Kumbu village, pushing uphill to the majestic Thou La pass. Imagine: a hidden world of vibrant rhododendrons, a symphony of color, especially if spring is in full swing. Our adventure ends at Longtey village, where our vehicle awaits, ready to take us away to the wonders of Bumthang (150kms/4 hours).

  • On the way, we will pause at the magnificent Trongsa Dzong. It is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, housing 23 temples within its formidable walls.
  • We will also pass the Yongtong La Pass (3,425m).

After a day of exploration and travel, a restful night awaits, preparing us for tomorrow's adventures.

Day 5

Experience the Spiritual Heart of Bhutan - Bumthang Valley

Today, we delve into the spiritual heart of Bhutan, exploring the sacred wonders of Bumthang (2800m). This region, steeped in legend, is the cradle of Bhutanese spirituality, home to tales of Guru Padmasambhava, Pema Linga, and the tertons.

Your guide, our storyteller, will lead us through Bumthang's sacred realms, a journey of discovery by foot or by road:

  • Kurjey Lhakhang, a temple complex of immense spiritual importance, named for the body print of Guru Rinpoche.
  • We then explore Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, believed to have been built in 659 AD by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet.
  • Tamzhing Monastery, born from the vision of Pema Lingpa in 1501, is a repository of extraordinary artistic and cultural treasures. Acknowledging its exceptional significance, the monastery was submitted for UNESCO World Heritage inscription in March 2012 and is presently considered for inclusion on the prestigious list
  • Our day concludes at Jakar Dzong, a formidable fortress established in 1549 by Lam Ngagi Wangchuk, a key figure in spreading the Drukpa Kagyu teachings.

Day 6

Tang Valley: A Day of Exploration

Following breakfast, we embark on a captivating day's journey into the verdant, secluded embrace of Tang Valley (approximately 46km/2 hours).

  • Our exploration begins at the centuries-old Ugyencholing Heritage Museum, a former royal residence, offering a glimpse into Tang's regal past. A traditional farmhouse lunch awaits, providing a taste of local life.
  • Our return to Bumthang is punctuated by a visit to Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), a serene sanctuary where the legendary Pema Lingpa unearthed Guru Rinpoche's hidden treasures in the 15th century, an ideal place for quiet reflection.

As evening descends, we'll enjoy a leisurely stroll through the heart of Bumthang town.

Day 7

Historic Punakha Awaits - Departing from Bumthang

Embark on an exploratory journey this morning as we depart the heart of Central Bhutan and venture back towards the West. Our 200km, 5–6-hour passage will be a chance to discover hidden vistas, with a planned exploration stop in Wangdue Phodrang.

  • Trongsa welcomes us again. Refreshed, we enter the Ta Dzong's National Museum, where beautiful objects and a compelling documentary reveal the heart of Bhutanese culture, history, and monarchy.
  • We'll ascend to the majestic Pele La Pass (3,420m), the gateway to Central Bhutan, travelling  through dense, enchanting forests.
  • Step into living history upon arrival in Wangdue Phodrang. A visit to Rinchengang Village, one of Bhutan's oldest settlements, is a must. This captivating village, a masterclass in traditional stonework, whispers tales of ancient craftsmanship and enduring cultural heritage.
  • We proceed towards Punakha, but first, a captivating hike to Chimi Lhakhang awaits. This highly recommended walk takes us through picturesque rice fields and a charming village, revealing the cultural heart of the region. Our destination: the renowned Chimi Lhakhang, a temple known for its unique association with fertility.

Day 8

Discovering the Treasures of Punakha Valley

  • Awaken to a journey through upper Punakha's valley, where charming farmhouses mark the landscape. A gentle, hour-long stroll through these rustic havens leads us to the exquisite Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Lhakhang. Here, prepare to be mesmerized by both the temple's intricate beauty and the panoramic views that stretch before you.
  • Following a delightful lunch, we'll explore the majestic Punakha Dzong, a fortress of profound historical significance, embraced by the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mochu rivers.
  • Towards the evening, we'll embark on a journey crossing the Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge, Bhutan's longest, a 228-meter adventure promising breathtaking, unforgettable views.

Day 9

From Valley to Valley: Punakha to Haa

Today, we embark on a breathtaking journey to the secluded Haa Valley (approximately 171 km/5-hours).

  • At Dochula, we'll embark on the enchanting Lungchutse hike, a journey through forests of hemlock and rhododendron. This cherished Bhutanese trek leads us to the hilltop sanctuaries of Trashigang Goenpa and Lungchutse Temple, offering breathtaking views. It's a gentle, two-hour ascent from Dochula, where the 108 Druk Wangyal chortens and the unique Druk Wangyal Lhakhang stand as silent guardians. Lungchutse Temple, perched at approximately 3566 meters, provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys - a perfect haven to savor nature's boundless gifts.
  • After lunch, we will drive through the majestic Chele La Pass (3,988m), Bhutan's highest motorable pass. Prepare for stunning panoramic views of both Paro and Haa valleys.

Day 10

The Haa Farewell, Paro's Reunion

Today, we embark on a breathtaking journey back to the Paro Valley (approximately 67 km/2-hours).

  • In the morning, we'll explore the serene Juney Dra temple (Hermitage) and wander through the charming old Haa town and savor a delicious traditional Bhutanese lunch.
  • We'll then return to Paro, on the way we'll visit the cliffside Dzongdrakha temple, often called "Little Tiger's Nest" for its dramatic setting.

Day 11

Leisurely Moments in Paro

After nine enriching, yet demanding, days of travel, and with tomorrow's grand hike awaiting, you've earned a day of complete rejuvenation. This is your time to replenish body and soul, to unwind and prepare for the highlight of our journey. We'll embrace a gentle pace, indulging in restorative activities designed to soothe and revitalize.

  • Following a nourishing breakfast, we'll journey to the serene Tenchen Choeling Nunnery, a Buddhist sanctuary for nuns overlooking the picturesque Paro Valley. This sacred site, founded in the 14th century by the revered Kecho Barawa Gyeltshen Pelzang, a being of profound spiritual significance, offers a unique glimpse into monastic life. We'll dedicate the morning to engaging with the nuns, learning about their daily routines and the rich tapestry of their lives.
  • Towards the afternoon, our scene shifts. Today, lunch unfolds as a cinematic picnic. Depending on the day's weather, we'll find ourselves nestled beside a whispering river, or deep within the embrace of ancient woods. Imagine enjoying a meal surrounded by nature, with the sound of leaves in the breeze or water flowing nearby. Here, we slow down and enjoy the moment, feeding both the body and the soul with the quiet beauty of the outdoors.
  • As the day concludes, we take a quiet walk to the 17th century Rinpung Dzong, its murals whispering stories of Milarepa. A peaceful end to a beautiful day, with our hearts already dreaming of tomorrow's Tiger's Nest.

Day 12

The Majestic Tiger's Nest - A Pilgrimage to Taktsang

Prepare for an unforgettable day as we embark on a 5–6-hours hike to Bhutan's crown jewel, the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Lhakhang). This iconic site, perched dramatically 600 meters above Paro Valley, is one of the kingdom's most sacred.

Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche's arrival atop a tigress, meditating in a cave that has since become a revered pilgrimage destination. Experience the spiritual aura of this breathtaking monastery, clinging impossibly to the cliffside.

  • After your descent, relax and rejuvenate with a traditional hot stone bath, easing any lingering fatigue.
  • In the evening, immerse yourself in the local culture by exploring Paro town and its vibrant market.
  • Tonight, we share a final, special dinner at a homestay, creating lasting memories with your guide and driver, who have journeyed beside you, not just as guides, but as friends.

Day 13

Farewell to the Dragon Kingdom

Now, it’s time to say goodbye to this magical place. Your guide and driver, who’ve been with you every step of the way, will take you to the international airport, sending you off with memories to last a lifetime.

Though your journey here comes to an end, may the spirit of Bhutan and its happiness stay with you wherever you go.
