Trongsa is often called the “Gateway to the East” and is perhaps the most historically significant town in Bhutan. Because of its strategic location in the center of the country, it was once the seat of power from which the royal family unified the kingdom.
The elevation varies wildly across the district, from as low as 600m in the southern subtropics to over 5,000m at the northern alpine peaks. The town is built on a steep ridge overlooking the Mangde Chhu river. Because it sits in the geographic center, it is separated from the east and west by two major mountain passes: Pele La (3,420m) to the west and Yutong La (3,425m) to the east.
The Most Famous Landmarks
1. The Crown Jewel – Trongsa Dzong

This is the largest and most spectacular fortress in Bhutan. Built on a spur overlooking the deep gorge of the Mangde Chhu river, the Dzong was so strategically placed that for centuries it controlled the only road connecting eastern and western Bhutan. The trail literally went through the Dzong’s courtyard. Every King of Bhutan must first serve as the Trongsa Penlop (Governor) before ascending the throne. You can visit the inner courtyards and the many temples (there are 25) within the complex.
2. The Royal Heritage Museum (Ta Dzong)

Sitting on a hill above the Dzong is a former watchtower that has been converted into a world-class museum. It houses the Raven Crown worn by the first and second Kings, as well as the personal belongings of the royal family. Because it was a watchtower, it offers the best aerial view of Trongsa Dzong and the surrounding valley.
Best Hikes to do in Trongsa
1. Mangdue Foot Trail

A moderate hike that starts near the “Viewpoint” and descends to the river, crossing a traditional cantilever bridge before climbing back up to the Dzong. It’s the original route travelers took before the road existed.
2. Semji Village Hike

A 7-km excursion to an ancient village that offers a peaceful look at rural farming life.
3. Nabji Korphu Trek

If you have more time (4–6 days), this community-based trek through the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park starts near Trongsa.

1. Trongsa Tshechu

Trongsa is home to the Trongsa Tshechu, one of the oldest and most influential festivals in Bhutan. It is held in the sprawling northern courtyard of the Trongsa Dzong, the country’s largest fortress. Since the first and second Kings of Bhutan ruled from Trongsa, this festival is considered a grand celebration of the monarchy and the spiritual heritage of the region.
