Jambay Lhakhang Drup: A Festival of Commemoration and Ritual
Jambay Lhakhang Drup is a four-day festival celebrating the construction of Jambay Lhakhang temple. Legend holds that Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo constructed Jambay Lhakhang, among 108 other temples, in the 7th century to restrain a massive female ogress who was impeding the spread of Buddhism. The festival is scheduled for the 15th day of the 9th month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar annually, a period that commonly falls within late October to early November. It honors Guru Rinpoche, the 8th-century Buddhist master who consecrated the temple. This festival is renowned for its masked dances and ritualistic ceremonies, with two events standing out: the Mewang (Fire Blessing) and the Tercham (Naked Dance).
Mewang (Fire Blessing): This ceremony involves purification rituals performed by gomchens (monks). The Mewang, or Fire Dance, involves igniting a pine archway. This ritual is performed to purify the earth, dispelling malevolent spirits. Participants who pass through the flaming arch are believed to have their sins absolved.
Tercham (Naked Dance): This dance is a highly anticipated event, particularly among local spectators. It occurs precisely at midnight. Sixteen naked men perform a rhythmic dance, accompanied by drums and cymbals. The dancers' faces are covered with white cloths and masks, while the rest of their body is completely naked. The dance is considered sacred and is deeply revered in the Bumthang region. Photography of this dance is strictly prohibited.
