Dagala Thousand Lake Trek

Popularly known as the Dagala thousand lake trek. The question on everyone’s tongue is “are there really thousand alpine lake ?”  No, but most elders of the area agree to the approximate figure of 100 back in the day. You will sight around 10 on the trek. 

The trail Starts from Genekha and ends at Chamgang, this  50km route involves four passes, including a significant high pass (4500m+), and provides opportunities to camp in stunning locations.

The journey leads you through a region blessed with a multitude of untouched, crystal lakes. Trekking amidst these sparkling waters, you'll be rewarded with spectacular vistas encompassing the entire Himalayan mountain chain and a collection of the world's loftiest summits, including Mt. Everest, Jomolhari, Masang Gang, Jichu Drake, Gangche Ta, and numerous others. This five-day trek offers a diverse experience, leading you through areas teeming with bird-life, vibrant alpine flower meadows, charming traditional Bhutanese villages, and more. Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Paro and explore the valley

Kuzuzangpola and welcome to Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (2262m), look for your friendly Like Bhutan Travels representative, holding a placard with your name, ready to guide you on your journey. We will then hop into our comfortable vehicle and drive to your pre-trek hotel.

  • Following lunch, explore Ta Dzong, a former 17th-century watchtower that protected Rinpung Dzong during inter-valley conflicts. Transformed into Bhutan's National Museum in 1968, it now houses a remarkable collection of antique thangka paintings, textiles, weaponry, and historical artifacts.
  • A short walk downhill leads to Rinpung Dzong, the Fortress of the Heap of Jewels. Discover its captivating history and admire the intricate wall paintings depicting Buddhist lore, including scenes from the life of Milarepa.
  • Following the visit to the Dzong, we'll walk down to one of Bhutan's oldest cantilever bridges, cross it, and be picked up by our vehicle on the other side.

Day 2

Acclimatization Hike to Taktsang Monastery

Prior to our 5-day trek, we'll undertake an acclimatization hike to Tiger's Nest. This revered Buddhist site, perched dramatically on a cliff at approximately 3100 m (10,000 ft), was built in 1692 and holds immense spiritual importance for the Bhutanese. The name ‘Tiger’s Nest’ originates from the legend of Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have arrived here on a tigress in the 8th century and meditated within its caves.

After your descent, Prepare for the thrill! This evening, your trekking guide will deliver an essential pre-trek briefing, setting the stage for an unforgettable, adventure-packed expedition.

Day 3

Genekha to Gur (Trek starts)

7KM | 5-6 HOURS | 230M ASCENT | DESCENT 60M | CAMP ALT 3290M

Setting off on your trek, the first day includes a delightful 45-minute drive to the scenic Genekha Village.This village, your trek's starting point, is also notable for being a prime producer of matsutake and chanterelle mushrooms.

  • Experience the natural wonders of Bhutan as you trek along mule paths, through terraced fields, and into coniferous forests alive with alpine flora and birdsong.
  • Descend to the river and then ascend for two hours to a massive rock platform at 3350m, where you can admire the valley's beauty. Your journey continues for another two hours to the Gur campsite (3290m), a haven of wild blooms.

Day 4

Gur to Labatama with views of Kanchenjunga and Dagala range (Trek day 2)

12KM | 6 HOURS | 1010M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 4300M

Experience the revitalizing power of nature as you trek across the ridges, surrounded by the beauty of rugged mountain vegetation.

  • Today's path is adorned with flowers, offers wild asparagus in spring, and opens into expansive meadows that will surely refresh your mind.
  • Crossing small streams, a gentle climb through scattered birches and rhododendrons leads to Pagalabtsa pass (4250m), distinguished by its large cairns. The pass offers incredible vistas of Kanchenjunga (Sikkim) and the majority of Bhutan's Himalayan peaks.
  • Descending, you'll see the Dagala range meadows and yak herder camps, where you'll have lunch. The trek continues with a descent into the Labatama valley and a gradual ascent past yak herder huts to Utsho Lake (4300m), teeming with golden trout. Your campsite is beautifully positioned next to the lake.

Day 5

Exploratory halt at Labatama (Trek day 3)

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the area today by visiting one of the nearby lakes: Relitsho, Hentsho, Setsho, or Jagetsho. These lakes are rich with trout, and your trekking leader will enchant you with the mystical stories they hold.

  • Savor a memorable lunch by the water's edge, embraced by the breathtaking panorama of the landscape.
  • If you are seeking an extra adventure after lunch, consider an attempt to summit Jomo peak at 5,050m. Make sure to allow ample time to return to camp before the evening, ready for the start of the next day's trekking.

Day 6

Labatama to Panka (Trek day 4)

8KM | 5-6 HOURS | 220M ASCENT | 520M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4000M

Today's walk takes you along the western edge of Dalatsho, leading to a saddle at 4520m. From this vantage point, you'll be rewarded with a majestic panorama showcasing prominent Himalayan peaks including Everest (Nepal), Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), Masangang, Tiger Mountain, Tsendagang, and Jichu Drake in Bhutan.

  • The descent from the saddle takes you past yak herder dwellings to the Doccha Chuu River. After walking alongside the river for a time, maintaining a higher elevation on the slope, you'll reach Panka. Keep an eye out for the Himalayan monal pheasant, a common sight here, as well as yaks and horses.
  • We will set up camp at Panka (4000m).

Day 7

Panka via Talakha and Chamgang to Thimphu (Trek day 5)

14KM | 8 HOURS | 180M ASCENT | 1540M DESCENT

Prepare for a day of traversing breathtaking heights as you cross a series of mountain passes, each revealing a more awe-inspiring panorama than the last. The trails are also adorned with the delicate beauty of various Blue Poppies (reaching their peak in June and July) and alive with the calls of numerous mountain bird species.

  • Today's lunch stop is at a junction where trails diverge towards Talakha and Wangduephodrang. After eating, a gradual one-hour climb will take you to the final pass, Tale La (4180m), offering superb views of the Dagala range and Thimphu.
  • From Tale La, begin a long descent through forests of spruce, birch, juniper, and rhododendrons to Talakha Goempa (3080m).
  • From the Goempa, a final hike down through mixed vegetation, apple orchards, and a feeder road will lead you to Chamgang Village, where your car will be waiting for your transfer back to Thimphu.

Day 8

Explore Thimphu City

Get ready to discover the Thimphu Valley after a satisfying breakfast!

  • Our journey takes us to the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, a colossal 169-foot statue. Prepare to be moved by the profound tranquility emanating from this golden icon, one of the largest Buddha statues on Earth.
  • As the day continues, awaken your senses at Simply Bhutan Museum. This living museum offers an authentic, hands-on experience, where you can not only witness but also participate in the rich traditions and diverse heritage of Bhutan. Plus, capture the moment with a traditional photo session.
  • After lunch Visit the Jungshi Hand-Made Paper Factory in Thimphu to witness the unique art of 'Deh-sho' production, where you'll learn how traditional Bhutanese paper is made from the bark of the Daphne tree using ancient technique in this modern world.
  • Step into the heart of Bhutanese artistry at the Craft Bazaar towards evening, a vibrant hub where you can immerse yourself in local culture and discover exquisite, Bhutan-made crafts. This unique market, featuring approximately 80 charming bamboo huts lining Norzin Lam, offers a truly authentic shopping experience.
  • Savor the Flavors of Local Life at the Bustling Farmers Vegetable Market: Engage with the vibrant pulse of Thimphu, where farmers proudly display their organic treasures. Taste the sweetness of local honey, the earthy richness of mushrooms, and the genuine warmth of Bhutanese hospitality.
  • The evening is free for you to explore Thimphu independently.

Day 9

A day in Punakha Valley

Today, we journey from the bustling heart of Thimphu to the tranquil sanctuary of punakha valley (74 Km /1.5 hours).

  • Our ascent to Dochula Pass (3,088 m) is a feast for the senses, with panoramic Himalayan views, vibrant prayer flags, and the aroma of steaming coffee. If the skies are clear, prepare to be awestruck by the towering Himalayan peaks.
  • Upon arrival in punakha We’ll begin with a visit to the magnificent Punakha Dzong, a fortress steeped in history and legend, Bhutan’s second largest.
  • Then, for a thrilling reward, we’ll embark on a short hike to conquer Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, a breathtaking 228 meters long.
  • As dusk approaches on our return to Thimphu, we'll pause for a captivating hike. This highly praised trail meanders through stunning rice paddies and a delightful village, offering a glimpse into the region's cultural essence, evidenced by the traditional phallus paintings adorning the homes. Our walk culminates at the celebrated Chimi Lhakhang, a temple uniquely revered for its connection to fertility.

Day 10

The Last Horizon: Bhutan to Home

As you prepare for your journey home, take these last few hours to soak in the mountain air.
