Pemagatshel is often called the “Lotus Garden of Happiness” (Pema meaning Lotus, Gatshel meaning Garden). It is one of Bhutan’s most rural and culturally rich districts, famous for its soulful folk music, master artisans, and a unique local sweet that is loved across the country.

The altitude varies significantly, from 1,000m in the lower valleys to 3,500m on the higher ridges with the town elevation of 1600m (5250 ft). The district is generally warmer and more humid than central Bhutan. It is heavily forested (over 87% forest cover), creating a lush, green environment.

What Pemagatshel is Famous For

1. The Birthplace of “Zhungdra” Music

Pemagatshel is the spiritual home of Zhungdra, Bhutan’s oldest and most complex form of traditional folk singing. The songs are known for their long, winding melodies. You will often hear the Ausa, a poignant song traditionally sung when bidding farewell to friends or family.

2. Master Artisans & Musical Instruments

The district is the national center for crafting traditional religious instruments.

  • Dhungs & Jalings: Artisans here are the primary producers of the Dhung (long ceremonial trumpet) and Jaling(oboe-like reed instrument) used in monasteries throughout Bhutan.
  • Weaving: Local weavers specialize in Bura (raw silk) textiles, particularly the intricate Aiekapur and Lungsermopatterns.

3.”Tshatsi Buram” (The Local Sweet)

You cannot visit Pemagatshel without trying Tshatsi Buram. It is a unique, chewy candy made from locally grown sugarcane. It is famous nationwide and is often the “must-buy” souvenir for Bhutanese people traveling through the east.
